Keynote Address by Justice Antonin Scalia

IIT Chicago-Kent and the Jack Miller Center were honored to welcome United States Supreme Court Justice Antonin G. Scalia to the law school October 18 to deliver the keynote address at a conference addressing "Judicial Takings: Property Rights and the Rule of Law."

During his visit, Justice Scalia met with IIT Chicago-Kent students and presided with Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne M. Burke '83 at a student moot court focused on the judicial takings issue.

Prior to delivering the keynote address at a conference on judicial takings, United Supreme Court Justice Antonin G. Scalia waits on stage as he is introduced by IIT Chicago-Kent Dean Harold J. Krent. “The law school was delighted to host Justice Scalia for this critical dialogue about fostering stable understandings of property rights,” commented Dean Krent, who noted in his introduction that Justice Scalia recently marked his 25th year on the Supreme Court.

Before the conference, Justice Scalia met with IIT Chicago-Kent students and answered a wide variety of questions concerning perceived politicization of the court, fears for the future of the federal judiciary, civility in the court, and other topics.

Following the conference, Justice Scalia and Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne M. Burke ’83 presided at a student moot court focused on the judicial takings issue. The judges heard arguments from IIT Chicago-Kent students Richard Gutierrez (far left) and David Jorgensen.
