IIT Chicago-Kent is sending two teams to the 2014 ABA National Appellate Advocacy Regional Competition
Two teams from IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law will participate in the 2014 ABA National Appellate Advocacy Regional Competition February 27 to March 1 at the Lloyd D. George U.S. Courthouse in Las Vegas.
Sponsored by the American Bar Association's Law Student Division, the competition emphasizes students' written and oral advocacy skills. The students will argue a hypothetical federal appellate case related to liability under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. The top four teams from six regional tournaments will advance to the national finals April 10 to 12 in Chicago.
Second-year students Iman Boundaoui, John Jefferson and Teri McClerklin will compete on one team. The other team will comprise third-year students Koplan Nwabuoku and Valerie Raedy.
Team member Iman Boundaoui completed her undergraduate education in political science at Northwestern University. Teammate John Jefferson received a degree in English literature from Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California. Teri McClerklin graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. McClerklin earned a master's degree in environmental engineering from Northwestern University. The team is coached by third-year students Colette Kopon and David Starshak, who represented IIT Chicago-Kent in last year's competition.
Team member Koplan Nwabuoku graduated from Tulane University with a bachelor's degree in international relations and international development. Teammate Valerie Raedy graduated cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in government and music from Lawrence University and Conservatory in Appleton, Wisconsin. The team is coached by third-year students Esther Mignanelli and Ryan Moore, who also competed in last year's tournament.
Founded in 1888, IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law is the law school of Illinois Institute of Technology, a private, Ph.D.-granting institution with programs in engineering, psychology, architecture, business, design and law. IIT Chicago-Kent is the only law school ever to win the National Trial Competition and the National Moot Court Competition in the same year (2008), and the first school to win the National Moot Court Competition in two consecutive years (2008 and 2009).
