A Welcome from the Chicago-Kent Student Bar Association

SBA Logo 2012

Congratulations on your admission and welcome to Chicago-Kent College of Law! As the President of the Student Bar Association (SBA), I look forward to welcoming you to the Chicago-Kent community in the Fall and introducing you to the nearly limitless opportunities offered by our extraordinary school.

We are committed to advocating for the student body in order to enhance your law school experience as the student governing body at Chicago-Kent. Our diverse Executive Board, Generally Assembly, and At-Large Membership ensure that you are always able to communicate with an SBA representative. We meet regularly to manage the affairs of the Chicago-Kent student body, to discuss important issues facing students, and to help our over forty student organizations succeed.

As you prepare for this new and exciting change in your life, the SBA is also preparing for your arrival. Over the past year, the SBA has worked tirelessly to make student government more responsive to student concerns. For example, we created a Career Development Committee dedicated to the professional development and advancement of our students. This Committee hosted several informal networking and professional development events that ultimately led to Summer and Fall employment opportunities for several students. The Executive Board and I have again demonstrated our commitment to advocating for and addressing the concerns of the student body by creating a Special Task Force that allows the SBA to resolve issues more efficiently and effectively than ever before. We've also started a variety of new programs designed to enrich your Chicago-Kent experience. For example, beginning in the Fall, students, faculty, and staff will be able to rent a bicycle for a few hours or even a day to have lunch at Millennium Park or run a quick errand in the Loop in between classes. Additionally, this year the SBA has created a Communications Committee to allow us to better inform the student body on issues affecting students and the C-K community. From our website to Twitter to Facebook or LinkedIn, there are always ways to find out about something new going on at Chicago-Kent!

I encourage all of you to explore the school and SBA websites and other social media, not only in anticipation of beginning in the Fall, but also throughout the school year to take advantage of special bookstore discounts and to get information regarding school-wide programs such as the Talent Show and Barrister's Ball, the premier formal social event of the year. With the variety of different opportunities open to students, it is easy to get involved!

If you have any questions about the school, about life as a Chicago-Kent student or about life in Chicago generally, please feel free to send me an e-mail at eacosta@kentlaw.iit.edu, or give me a call at (214) 403-8823.

Again, welcome to Chicago-Kent. We look forward to you joining us in the Fall and cannot wait to see the wonderful things that you will accomplish here and in your careers!

Sincerely,

Emily T. Acosta
