Chicago-Kent Honors Scholar
Class of 2019
Alan Montera received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. After graduation, he served as a junior officer on the USS Seawolf (SSN 21), a fast attack submarine based in Bremerton, Washington. As a junior officer, he was responsible for supervising the multi-million dollar S6W Nuclear Reactor as well as navigating the submarine through foreign waters. While aboard, the Seawolf completed a six-month Western Pacific deployment and multiple significant maintenance and upgrade periods.
After completing his naval service, Alan returned to Chicago where he grew up. He worked as a maintenance supervisor at a steel mill, and subsequently worked as a senior design and manufacturing engineer.
Because of his technical background, Alan chose to attend Chicago-Kent to be part of its strong Intellectual Property program. During his 1L and 2L summers, Alan clerked at McAndrews, Held & Malloy, a midsized IP boutique, and plans to return there after graduation. At school, he has been the Treasurer of the Asian Pacific American Law Student Association, and involved in Law Review and the Intellectual Property Law Society.
