Full-time and Part-time Divisions

Chicago-Kent offers full-time day, part-time day, and part-time evening divisions. Entrance requirements are the same for all divisions, and the full-time faculty teaches in all three. You must indicate on your application the division for which you wish to be considered.

In accordance with Law School policy, students who take more than 13 credits in a semester are not permitted to work more than 20 hours a week. Full-time students are discouraged from working in their first year. First-year students who find it necessary to work more than 20 hours per week must enroll in either the part-time day or evening division. Upper-level students who find it necessary to work more than 20 hours a week must limit their course load to no more than 13 credits.

Full-time students take a total of 30 credits in the first year. After the first year, full-time students normally take 12 to 16 credit hours per semester and complete their degree requirements in three years.

Part-time students take a total of 22 credits in the first year. After the first year, part-time students normally take 8 to 11 credit hours per semester and can finish their degree requirements in four years, particularly if they take classes during one summer session. The majority of part-time students are enrolled in the evening division. Part-time evening division classes are scheduled Monday through Thursday from 6:00 PM to 9:25 PM; however, evening students do not attend all of those hours every night.

The law school also reserves a limited number of seats in the day division for part-time students. Enrollment in the part-time day division is limited, and seats are reserved primarily for students whose personal circumstances prevent them from attending the part-time evening division. Part-time day division students attend courses with students enrolled in the full-time day division.

Students may apply to transfer from one division to another after the end of their first academic year.

Evening JD Program

A Flexible Program for Working Professionals

Chicago-Kent's evening J.D. program is geared toward working professionals seeking a highly selective, competitive course of part-time study. In recent years, entering class sizes have ranged from about 20 to 35 students, providing for a low student/faculty ratio and close interaction with faculty members.

As a first-year evening student at Chicago-Kent, you may follow a traditional evening schedule with classes Monday through Thursday evening, or you may opt for a flexible scheduling option that permits an early start in the summer and a reduced course load during the fall semester.

We realize that the decision to pursue your law degree while balancing work and family is a significant one, and Chicago-Kent is dedicated to supporting the needs of our part-time students. After completing your first year of required doctrinal classes, there is substantial flexibility to tailor your schedule to your personal circumstances. If your work schedule permits, you may take up to half of your courses during the day. Although not all elective courses are offered in the evening division, we ensure that recommended courses, and a wide variety of other electives, are offered in the evening. Some courses are scheduled at 4:00 and attract a mixed enrollment of both full-time and part-time students. Full-time faculty regularly teach in the evening division, including all required doctrinal courses. The law school attracts a diverse student body from a wide variety of professional backgrounds, providing for robust classroom discussions and diverse perspectives.
