LL.M. in Legal Innovation and Technology
An application is considered complete only when we have received all of the documents described below. All material submitted with or in support of an application becomes the property of the law school and is not returnable.
Candidates are encouraged to submit their application online and submit all supporting documents as soon as possible. Students are admitted on a rolling admissions basis, so it is advantageous to apply early.
You will provide all information and documents as part of the online application process. You can monitor your application status in the Application Portal and with the App Tracker. You will receive emails if we are missing any application documents as well as emails updating you on your overall application status.
Note: Before beginning the online application process, we suggest that you order copies of your transcripts from all college/universities that you attended. You will upload your transcripts as part of the online application process. For additional information, see step 3 below.
Your application will be reviewed for admission consideration once the Office of Admissions has received the following documents:
Application for Admission
Follow the step-by-step instructions below to complete the application through the online Application Portal.
- Access the online application and click Sign Up to create an account.
- Follow the online instructions and sign in using your username and password.
- Under "Welcome to Illinois Institute of Technology" click Online Application, then click Start A New Application.
- Select Start a New Graduate Application (far left of the screen) and then click Start Application.
- Under the "New Application" heading, select the following drop down menu items:
- Level: Graduate App
- Student Type: On-Campus
- Degree: Master of Law
- Academic Major: Legal Innovation and Technology
- Click Start Application to complete the application form and upload the required documents.
Each applicant must submit a personal statement in essay format that does not exceed 1,000 words. There is a place in the online application form where you can upload this statement. The essay should include discussion of your reasons for pursuing the LL.M. program, the professional goals which you expect to advance, your academic background, and your relevant professional experience or related accomplishments to date.
Your statement must be saved in PDF format.
Letters of Recommendation
Two letters of recommendation are required. These may be from law school professors or from lawyers with whom you have worked who can assess your capacity for advanced legal study. If possible, each applicant should provide one academic and one professional reference.
Letters of recommendation must be submitted through the online Application Portal. You will input the recommender's name and email address, and they will receive an electronic invitation to their email and then submit their recommendation. You will not see this document as they will upload it themselves and it will go immediately into your application.
You should arrange to have official transcripts of prior university study available for submission with your online application. Your law school transcript must show degree and date conferred. You must indicate on the application all colleges/universities you attended and provide official transcripts, regardless of whether a degree was earned or not, and even if you received transfer credit from your next institution. As part of the online application process, you will upload electronic copies of your transcripts.
All applicants who have done academic work at foreign institutions must provide original academic records and officially certified English translations of the original records. If the degree is completed, you must upload your original degree certificate or provisional certificate along with your academic transcripts or mark sheets. In addition, please submit official information on the grading system.

How to Upload Documents
Please do not submit your official documents via post; all documents need to be uploaded electronically. Be sure all documents are in PDF format. If there are multiple pages of one document, merge all pages into one PDF file.
Scan a copy of your official and original paper transcripts, individual mark sheets, or electronic transcript provided to you from your institution's Registrar. Do NOT upload your institution's web-based academic record or a document stating it is not an official transcript. Please note attested copies are not acceptable and will delay processing time. You must include an official English translation if your official transcripts are not issued in English.
Make sure that all critical and identifying marks have been scanned and are legible. These include the institution's name, your name, and the names of your courses and the grades you have received. It is important that you scan both the front and back (if there is information on the back) of your documents. We will need to be able to review the information provided on the back of your documents concerning credit hours, the institution's grading scale, etc.
If you receive transcripts or mark sheets from the school, we allow you to break the seal of the envelope to then scan and upload your documents. Domestic applicants may have a stamp on their transcripts that says "Issued to Student."

Resume / Work History
Please upload a resume that lists your significant employment over the past ten years and describes your responsibilities in your current position.
IELTS or TOEFL scores
The results of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) are required of all applicants who are not native speakers of English or who did not receive their undergraduate education at an institution that uses English as the primary language of instruction. We require official TOEFL or IELTS scores sent directly to Illinois Institute of Technology by the testing service. Please request that your scores be set to institution code 1318; no department code is required.
The IELTS or TOEFL may be waived at the discretion of the Admissions Committee for applicants who can otherwise substantiate their English proficiency. Applicants who wish to have the IELTS or TOEFL requirement waived must submit a written request with their application for admission that includes an explanation of their familiarity with English and any appropriate supporting documentation.
International Applicants Only—Financial Support Documents
If you will need an F1 student visa, you must complete the LL.M. Financial Affidavit of Support Form. Please read all instructions carefully to ensure that each required section of the form is complete.
You may submit your financial support documents after being notified of admission, if you wish; however, an I-20 cannot be issued to any admitted student until valid documents have been received and approved by the Office of Admissions. For this reason, we encourage you to submit them as early as possible.
Please note, submission of the Financial Affidavit form is not required for review of your application.
International Applicants Only—Passport Identity Page
A copy of your passport identity page must be submitted through your App Tracker.
The copy of your passport identity page is not required for purposes of application review and admission decision, although applicants are strongly encouraged to submit it prior to admission, if possible. This documentation aids in efficient processing of your I-20, if you are admitted.

All information is confidential and will not be used to discriminate in admission to or participation in any of the educational programs or activities offered in the colleges of Illinois Institute of Technology.
