Practical Skills Training
Learning by Doing: Real-World Experience
A distinguishing characteristic of life at IIT Chicago-Kent is our emphasis not only on classical legal studies and theory but on rigorous skills training and experiential learning in fields of law directly related to your career goals. Our students begin their professional skills training in our comprehensive Legal Research and Writing Program, which lays a solid foundation for all other skills development. We offer a variety of ways for you to gain practical experience as a student through:
- 1L Your Way clinical rotations
- Praxis certificate program
- Legal clinics
- Trial advocacy
- Appellate advocacy
- Volunteer opportunities
If you're thinking about a career in the public sector, the federal and state governments have a significant presence in Chicago and provide numerous opportunities for students to gain practical experience. In the Illinois Attorney General's Office alone, Chicago-Kent students have recently worked in the crime victim services division, special litigation bureau, high-tech crimes bureau, and civil and criminal appeals divisions. The city and county offer a similar array of opportunities as well.
For students planning to practice outside Illinois, our career counselors can assist you in identifying skill-building opportunities in the state where you wish to practice.
Recent Chicago-Kent graduates who are starting their own practices may apply to participate in our Solo & Small Practice Incubator, a one-year program designed to offer valuable experience and ongoing training to a select group of entrepreneurial-minded recent graduates to help build their professional careers as solo or small firm legal practitioners.
