Scholarship Policies

The following policies govern Chicago-Kent College of Law scholarship awards. For questions about scholarship awards and scholarship policies, contact Gabriela Amador, director of admissions, at 312.906.5025 or gamador@kentlaw.iit.edu.

General Scholarship Policies

  1. Unless specifically noted at the time of the award, scholarship awards may only be credited against Chicago-Kent tuition and may not be applied to student fees or awarded above tuition.

  2. Students who visit at another school will forfeit a portion of their scholarship award.

Renewable Merit Scholarships

  1. All renewable merit scholarships are guaranteed each year that a student is enrolled in classes at Chicago-Kent. There is no GPA renewal requirement. The total value of the award over three (or four) years is specified in the recipient's scholarship award letter and on the scholarship acceptance form.

  2. Scholarship awards may only be credited against Chicago-Kent tuition, and each academic year's award is distributed one-half each semester and only for the semesters in which a student is enrolled at Chicago-Kent. Uneven award disbursements may be made in special circumstances.

  3. For partial-tuition merit scholarship recipients: If a student enrolls in summer session courses, the scholarship will be applied at the rate of $1,500 per course and the balance of the award will be adjusted accordingly. If a student does not wish to receive scholarship funds in the summer session, the student must notify the Office of Financial Aid.

For full-tuition scholarship recipients: If a student enrolls in summer session courses, the full-tuition scholarship will cover the summer course tuition in full. The award will not cover the summer course fee.

  4. If at any time a merit scholarship recipient changes divisions, the balance of the award will be redistributed across the remaining semesters of enrollment.

Class Rank Merit Awards

  1. Students will be eligible for merit scholarship awards based on academic performance in law school if they rank in the top 5 percent or 10 percent of their graduating class at the end of each academic year. Students must meet the specified class rank at the end of each academic year in order to qualify for a class rank merit scholarship for the upcoming year.

  2. Renewable scholarships and class rank merit scholarships are not cumulative and students will receive only the highest award for which they qualify. For example, a student receiving a renewable scholarship, who then qualifies for a merit scholarship based on class rank, will receive the higher of the two awards.

  3. Class rank scholarships are distributed one-half in the fall semester, one-half in the spring semester, and only in the semesters in which the student is enrolled at Chicago-Kent. Uneven award disbursements may be made in special circumstances.

Activity Scholarships

  1. Currently, students may be eligible for activity scholarships if they hold select leadership positions on the Chicago-Kent Law Review, Moot Court Honor Society, and Student Bar Association. These awards supplement any existing renewable or class rank merit scholarships. However, the total of all awards may not exceed the cost of tuition.

  2. Activity scholarships are distributed one-half in the fall semester, one-half in the spring semester, and only for the semesters in which the student is enrolled at Chicago-Kent. Uneven award disbursements may be made in special circumstances.

  3. The Law Review editor-in-chief may apply a portion of their full tuition scholarship for the upcoming academic year to any credits that he/she registers for during the preceding summer to allow for a lighter course load during the academic year.

Students Taking More Than 87 Credit Hours

J.D. students who take additional credit hours beyond the 87 credit hour graduation requirement will receive a 50 percent scholarship for the additional credits. Students should contact Assistant Dean Stephen Sowle at 312.906.5282 or ssowle@kentlaw.iit.edu to request the scholarship.

Employee Tuition Remission & Scholarships

Tuition remission is a benefit available to eligible Illinois Tech employees. To determine eligibility, please confirm with Human Resources. The full HR policy related to processing tuition remission benefits can be found on the "Work" tab of the myIIT portal.

Chicago-Kent scholarships may be combined with tuition remission. The scholarship award will be applied first and tuition remission may be applied to the remaining tuition balance as permitted by HR policy.
