Externship Opportunity - Law Office of Michael R. Johnson LLC

Our small but impactful law firm is seeking a highly motivated Legal Extern to join our team. This position is being offered for academic credit through IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law. The Legal Extern position requires 32 hours per week for the 8 week Summer semester and 16 hours per week for the Fall and Spring semesters.

The ideal candidate will have excellent legal writing and research ability that has been demonstrated. The candidate will be expected to begin researching and writing motions, memoranda, and appellate briefs. This is a unique opportunity for a candidate who is eager to gain valuable training and experience in courtroom advocacy and appellate practice. The Legal Extern will work closely with more experienced lawyers to handle complex legal matters and represent our clients in primarily in the Appellate Court of Illinois and the Circuit Court of Cook County. Appellate work will principally involve civil commitment appeals on behalf of the committed person stemming from cases under the Sexually Violent Persons Commitment Act, 725 ILCS 207/1 et seq.

This is a remote/hybrid position. The candidate should be comfortable working primarily in a remote environment. In person time is expected primarily at the courthouse for scheduled hearings and trials.
