Student Services

The Chicago-Kent Law Library supports students by providing services that assist with research, study help, and course materials. Our research librarians teach legal research sessions across the curriculum, including upper-level legal writing classes and "prepare to practice" sessions designed to help Chicago-Kent students shine in the workplace.

Chicago-Kent librarians create online research guides for both legal and non-legal research. The librarians collect sample exams from faculty for Chicago-Kent courses and curriculums, all available for student review.

The research librarians can help you in person and via email or phone with research assistance for a course, clinic, seminar paper, externship, and work.

Research Assistance

Chicago-Kent Law librarians are available to address students’ research questions, both legal and non-legal. Please feel free to email us at refreq@kentlaw.iit.edu. You can also submit the Research Consultation Request form to meet with a librarian. We can assist you via email or if you prefer to meet in person or via Zoom.

Technical Assistance

Our librarians offer practical skills training through in-class workshops and guides that focus on common software like Microsoft Word or Clio or assignments like the appellate brief. Students are welcome to contact librarians for support in troubleshooting documents and presentations beyond individual assignments.

Student organization leaders are also welcome to reach out for support with student organization websites and strategies using Google Apps for education for organization purposes.

Group Study Rooms

Ten group study rooms are available in the library on the 8th and 9th floors to support collaborative work and provide space for oral argument practice. Reserve a study room by visiting the Library service desk on the 9th floor. Each student may reserve a room for one hour per day, and students may make reservations seven days in advance.

Borrowing Materials

The library offers access to print resources through Illinois Tech’s libraries and our consortial partners. Currently enrolled students may borrow materials from the Chicago-Kent Law Library, Illinois Tech’s other libraries, libraries in the I-Share consortium, and through Interlibrary Loan from libraries across the country.

Chicago-Kent and Illinois Tech

Materials from Chicago-Kent and Illinois Tech libraries may be found in open stacks or may be requested for pick up through the library catalog. Notifications are sent via email when the requested item is received and available for pick up. See Borrowing Materials for information about materials and loan periods at the Chicago-Kent Law Library.

I-Share

Students have access to the collections of 85+ academic libraries within Illinois. After logging in using your Chicago-Kent credentials, use the”‘I-Share” button in the catalog to request an item. Illinois Institute of Technology is the default pick up institution but you need to select Chicago-Kent Law Library as the pick up location. Items typically arrive in five to seven days. Notifications are sent via email when the item is received and available for pick up. Manage renewals and requests through your Library Account. Students may also borrow items from any I-Share library in person by presenting a valid student ID. We recommend calling the I-Share library to confirm item availability and current access policy.

Interlibrary Loan

Items not available at the IIT Chicago-Kent Law Library or through I-Share may be requested through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Search for items and request directly through WorldCat.  Alternatively, send an email with citations for items needed to illreq@kentlaw.iit.edu. Notifications are sent via email when the item is received and available for pick up. ILL requests can require up to two weeks to arrive.
