IIT Chicago-Kent presents the E-Discovery Institute

IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law will hold a one-day E-Discovery Institute: "What Every Lawyer Needs to Know About E-Discovery" on March 21 at the law school, 565 West Adams Street (between Clinton and Jefferson streets) in Chicago.

As electronic discovery or "e-discovery" becomes more widely used in the legal profession, litigation attorneys need to know how to deal with the enormous volume of electronic information that is often overlooked or exploited during the trial phase. They need to know how failure to preserve electronically stored information (ESI) can create serious consequences—including monetary and evidentiary sanctions—the effects of which may last beyond a single case. They also need to know how to efficiently manage the costs of preservation, collection, search, review and production related to ESI. Most importantly, trial lawyers need to know how to develop and manage an effective e-discovery strategy.

IIT Chicago-Kent's E-Discovery Institute is designed to introduce participants to the potential complexities and pitfalls of e-discovery issues that may arise in any size case. The program, taught by leading practitioners and industry experts, will address current trends in e-discovery law and emerging technologies, using real-life examples and illustrations. Among the issues addressed are predictive coding, cloud storage, social media, and the strategies litigants can use to successfully manage ESI preservation and collection.

Participants will learn the ethical issues related to discovery of social media in discussions of the Stored Communications Act, third-party subpoenas, informal discovery, and interrogatories and document requests. There will be an update on the progress of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit's pilot program as well as updates on ESI activities in other jurisdictions.

Presenters include the Honorable James F. Holderman, chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois; attorneys Jay C. Carle and Scott A. Carlson of the Chicago law firm Seyfarth Shaw LLP; Wendy J. Muchman, chief of litigation and professional education, Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission of the Supreme Court of Illinois; Todd Kunz, vice president of eDiscovery Solutions, Compliance Staffing Inc.; Kevin M. Clark, vice president of TrustPoint International's client advisory group; Michael Dwyer, legal operations, Motorola Solutions Inc.; and Mandi Ross, CEO/managing director of Prism Litigation Technology.

This program is eligible for 6.5 hours of MCLE credit, with 5.5 hours of general MCLE and 1.0 hour of ethics/professionalism credit.
